In March 2019 I visited Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, New Mexico. The ranch is famous for being the home of and inspiration for Georgia O’Keeffe. It was interesting to see the landscapes that inspired some of O’Keeffe’s most famous works. I was fascinated by how she captured the landscapes around her without needing to paint in a photo-realistic way.
In March of 2018 I traveled to Iceland and photographed this wreck on the black sand beach at Sólheimasandur.
Despite seeming so desolate and abandoned in this photo, it’s a popular tourist destination and I needed to wait my turn before taking this photo. Still, this is one of the most interesting things I’ve seen in the past year and it felt surreal to see this wreck in person. If you step a few feet away from it, you will quickly leave all the people behind and find yourself surrounded by black sand, mountains, and the sea. It’s easy to imagine how desolate the area must have seemed to the crew (who all survived) of this US Navy DC-3.
